Burning of any waste on a bonfire can cause pollution. Oil contaminated waste or plastics will produce toxic fumes that are hazardous to you and other people. Any smoke from bonfires that causes a nuisance to your neighbours is an offence. It is illegal to produce dark smoke as this always contains toxic substances. This could result in you being prosecuted.
It is a criminal offence to burn waste without an appropriate environmental permit or without registering a suitable exemption. For more information on environmental permits or exemptions you can contact the Environment Agency on 08708 506 506.
If you give your waste to someone else, you must use a waste carrier whose business is registered with the Environment Agency. The carrier will need to show you proof that they are registered to carry waste. When you give your waste to them, you must complete a waste transfer note that gives details of where the waste will be taken. This is your duty of care. If you have any questions on how to dispose of your waste legally call the Environment Agency on 08708 506 506. You can find the registered carriers in your area by visiting www.environment-agency.gov.uk/publicregister
Recycling may be an option for some types of waste. For further information regarding your options, please contact Envirowise on 0800 585 794 or www.envirowise.gov.uk
